Abstract

Introduction and Aim: Distress tolerance and affect control are among the most important components of mental health and play a critical role in psychological adjustment, interpersonal functioning, and coping with emotional stress. The present study aimed to model the relationship between distress tolerance and affect control with the mediating roles of self-consistency and ego strength among adults living in Tehran.

Methodology: This study employed a descriptive-correlational design using structural equation modeling. The statistical population consisted of adults aged 20 to 45 years living in Tehran in 2026. A total of 420 participants were selected using convenience sampling, and data from 398 individuals were ultimately analyzed. Research instruments included the Distress Tolerance Scale by Simons and Gaher, the Affect Control Scale by Williams and colleagues, the Self-Consistency Scale, and the Ego Strength Scale. Data were analyzed using SPSS-27 and AMOS-24 through Pearson correlation coefficients, structural equation modeling, and bootstrapping analysis.

Findings: The findings indicated that distress tolerance had significant direct positive effects on affect control, self-consistency, and ego strength (P<0.01). In addition, self-consistency and ego strength significantly predicted affect control (P<0.01). Bootstrapping results demonstrated that self-consistency and ego strength played significant mediating roles in the relationship between distress tolerance and affect control. Model fit indices also indicated satisfactory fit between the proposed conceptual model and empirical data.

Conclusion: The findings suggest that distress tolerance can improve affect control through strengthening self-consistency and ego strength. Therefore, psychological interventions aimed at enhancing distress tolerance, reinforcing personality structure, and promoting ego strength may contribute to better emotional regulation and improved mental health.
