Abstract

Introduction and Aim: Sexual taboos, as cultural and cognitive barriers, may influence men’s sexual functioning by inducing shame, anxiety, and impaired intimate communication. This study aimed to investigate the role of sexual taboos in explaining premature ejaculation with the mediating effects of adaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies and social exchange styles.

Methodology: This applied descriptive study employed a correlational design using structural equation modeling. The statistical population included married men or those with a stable sexual partner aged 25–40 years in Bushehr, from which 170 participants were selected through convenience and snowball sampling. Data were collected using the Sexual Taboo Beliefs Questionnaire, Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, Social Exchange Styles Questionnaire, and Premature Ejaculation Diagnostic Tool. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS-27 and AMOS-22 through path analysis and bootstrap methods.

Findings: The results indicated that sexual taboos had a significant direct effect on premature ejaculation. Additionally, adaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies and social exchange styles played significant mediating roles, reducing the direct impact of sexual taboos on premature ejaculation.

Conclusion: The findings suggest that the impact of sexual taboos on premature ejaculation is substantially influenced by individuals’ emotion regulation and interpersonal interaction patterns, highlighting the importance of psychological interventions targeting these factors.
