Comparison the Effectiveness of Schema Therapy and Dialectical Behavior Therapy on Health Promoting Lifestyle in Obese Women

Introduction and Aim: Obese women have deficiencies and shortcomings in health related characteristics. Therefore, the present study was conducted with the aim of comparison the effectiveness of schema therapy and dialectical behavior therapy on health promoting lifestyle in obese women.
Methodology: This research was quasi-experimental with a pretest, posttest, and four-month follow-up design with a control group. The research population consisted of all obese women of Tehran city in 2025 year, which from them 45 participants were selected through available sampling method and were randomly assigned into three equal groups, including two experimental groups and one control group. Each experimental group received 12 weekly 90 minute sessions of schema therapy and dialectical behavior therapy, respectively, while the control group remained on a waiting list for treatment. Data were collected using the Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile (Walker et al., 1987) and were analyzed using repeated measures analysis of variance and Bonferroni post hoc test in SPSS-26.
Findings: The findings of this study indicated that both schema therapy and dialectical behavior therapy significantly improved health promoting lifestyle components including nutrition, physical activity, health responsibility, stress management, interpersonal support, and self-actualization in obese women, and the results sustained at the follow-up stage (P<0.001). Also, comparison between the intervention methods revealed that schema therapy was significantly more effective than dialectical behavior therapy in improving health promoting lifestyle components including nutrition, physical activity, health responsibility, stress management, interpersonal support, and self-actualization in obese women (P<0.001).
Conclusion: According to the findings of this study, counselors and therapists may use schema therapy to improve health promoting lifestyle behaviors, particularly in obese women.
