Presenting a Structural Model of Adolescent Self-Esteem based on the Marital Relationship Quality with the Mediating Role of Parent-Child Relationship

Abstract

Introduction and Aim: Adolescent self-esteem is one of the important indicators of health and well-being and plays an important and effective role in improving their condition in various aspects. Therefore, the present research was conducted with the aim of presenting a structural model of adolescent self-esteem based on the marital relationship quality with the mediating role of parent-child relationship.

Methodology: The present study was a descriptive from type of correlation. The population of this research was all adolescents aged of 16 to 18 years in Sepidan city along with their parents in 2025 year with numbering 3500 people. The sample size was determined 187 people who were selected by multistage cluster sampling method and responded to research instruments including the Self-Esteem Scale (Rosenberg, 1965), Marital Relationship Quality Scale (Busby et al., 1995), and Revised Parent-Child Interaction Questionnaire (Lange et al., 2002). The data of the present study were analyzed by methods of Pearson correlation coefficients and structural equation modeling in SPSS and AMOS software version 23.

Findings: The results of this research showed that the adolescent self-esteem model based on the marital relationship quality with the mediating role of parent-child relationship had a good fit. In this model, the direct effect of the marital relationship quality on adolescents' parent-child relationship and self-esteem was positive and significant, and the direct effect of the parent-child relationship on their self-esteem was positive and significant, and the indirect effect of marital relationship quality with the mediating role of parent-child relationship on adolescents self-esteem was positive and significant (P<0.001).

Conclusion: According to the aforementioned findings and results, to increase and improve adolescent self-esteem can be used the educational workshops to provide the basis for improving the marital relationship quality and parent-child relationship.
