Abstract

Introduction and Aim: Patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing dialysis experience substantial physical and psychological burdens, including anxiety sensitivity and somatic symptoms, which may adversely affect their adaptation to treatment and overall quality of life. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of an integrated intervention combining yoga exercises and healthy lifestyle education in reducing anxiety sensitivity and somatic symptoms among patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing dialysis.

Methodology: This quasi-experimental study employed a pretest–posttest design with a control group. The statistical population consisted of patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing dialysis at treatment centers in Tehran, Iran, in 2026. Thirty eligible patients were selected through purposive sampling and randomly assigned to an experimental group (n=15) or a control group (n=15). The experimental group received an integrated intervention consisting of yoga exercises and healthy lifestyle education in eight 90-minute weekly sessions, whereas the control group received no intervention. Data were collected using the Anxiety Sensitivity Index and the Somatic Complaints subscale of the Symptom Checklist-90. Analysis of covariance was performed using SPSS version 26.

Findings: Multivariate analysis demonstrated a statistically significant difference between the experimental and control groups in the combined dependent variables at posttest after controlling for pretest scores (F=33.47, P<0.001). Univariate ANCOVA further showed that the integrated intervention significantly reduced anxiety sensitivity in the experimental group compared with the control group (F=4.83, P<0.05). A significant intervention effect was also observed for somatic symptoms (F=61.80, P<0.01). The reported effect sizes for anxiety sensitivity and somatic symptoms were 0.15 and 0.69, respectively, indicating a particularly substantial intervention effect on somatic symptoms.

Conclusion: Integrating yoga exercises with healthy lifestyle education appears to be an effective complementary, non-pharmacological intervention for reducing anxiety sensitivity and somatic symptoms in patients undergoing dialysis. Incorporating this combined approach into psychological and supportive care programs in dialysis centers may contribute to improved psychological and physical adaptation among patients with chronic kidney disease.
