Predicting Attitudes towards Hijab based on Parenting Styles, Mental Health and Lifestyle among Female High School Students of Tehran City

Abstract

Introduction and Aim: Considering the importance of hijab and attitudes towards it, this research was conducted with the aim of predicting attitudes towards hijab based on parenting styles, mental health and lifestyle among female high school students of Tehran city.

Methodology: The present study was cross-sectional from type of correlation. The population of this study consisted of female high school students of Tehran city during the academic years of 2024-5, which among them 267 individuals were selected as the sample using cluster random sampling method. Data were collected using the Parenting Styles Inventory (Baumrind, 1971), Scaled Version of General Health Questionnaire (Goldberg & Hillier, 1979), Islamic Lifestyle Questionnaire (Kaviani, 2009) and Hijab Attitude Questionnaire (Mahdizadeh, 2011). For data analysis were used from the methods of Pearson correlation coefficients and multiple regression with stepwise model in SPSS-26 software.

Findings: The correlation coefficient findings indicated that permissive and authoritarian parenting styles and low mental health had a negative and significant relationship with attitudes towards hijab in female students, and authoritative parenting style and lifestyle had a positive and significant relationship with their attitudes towards hijab (P<0.001). Also, the multiple regression with stepwise model findings revealed that only mental health entered the regression equation and this variable was able to predict 58% of the changes in attitudes towards hijab in female students (P<0.001).

Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, to improve attitudes towards hijab in female students can be prepared the ground for enhancing their mental health.
