Abstract

Introduction and Aim: The widespread use of online search has facilitated access to information but raised concerns about cognitive dependence and impaired cognitive functioning. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in reducing cognitive dependence on online search and improving working memory and deep information processing.

Methodology: This study employed a quasi-experimental pretest–posttest design with a control group, involving 45 adults from Tehran who were randomly assigned to an experimental group (n = 23) and a control group (n = 22). The instruments included a cognitive dependence on online search scale, a working memory test, and a deep information processing scale. The experimental group received eight 90-minute sessions of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, while the control group received no intervention. Data were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA and Bonferroni post-hoc tests.

Findings: The results indicated a significant interaction effect between group and time for cognitive dependence on online search, working memory, and deep information processing (p < 0.05). The experimental group showed a significant decrease in cognitive dependence on online search and significant improvements in working memory and deep information processing compared to the control group. Bonferroni tests confirmed significant pretest–posttest differences in the experimental group across all variables, whereas no significant changes were observed in the control group.

Conclusion: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is an effective intervention for reducing cognitive dependence on online search and enhancing cognitive functioning in the digital age.
