The Relationship between Parenting Styles and Parents’ Conflict Management with Behavioral Problems of Children and Adolescents

Abstract

Introduction and Aim: Children and adolescents may experience numerous behavioral problems. Accordingly, the present study was conducted with the aim of investigating the relationship between parenting styles and parents’ conflict management with behavioral problems of children and adolescents.

Methodology: This research was a descriptive from type of correlation. The study population comprised parents of students aged 7 to 18 years in of Hashtjin and Khalkhal cities during the 2022-3 academic years, which a sample of 200 individuals was selected using available sampling method. The research instruments included the Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire (Robinson et al., 2001), Marital Conflicts Questionnaire (Sanaei, 2000), and Revised Behavior Problems Checklist (Quay & Peterson, 1987). The data from this study were analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficients and multiple regression with a enter model in SPSS-26 software.

Findings: The findings of the present research indicated that authoritarian and permissive parenting styles and marital conflicts had a positive and significant correlation with behavioral problems of children and adolescents, and the authoritative parenting style had a negative and significant correlation with behavioral problems of them (P<0.001). Also, parenting styles and marital conflicts could significantly predict 25 percent of the variations of behavioral problems of children and adolescents (P<0.001).

Conclusion: The results of this research indicated the effective role of parenting styles and marital conflicts in predicting behavioral problems of children and adolescents. Therefore, planning to reduce behavioral problems of children and adolescents is essential through parenting styles and parents’ conflict management.
